Why AI Will Need More IT Professionals, Not Fewer
The fear that AI is about to consume the IT job market has become the dominant background anxiety in conversations about technology education. Parents researching certification training for their teenager have probably absorbed it, even if they have not put it into words. The internet promises that ChatGPT will replace coders, that AI tools will replace help desk technicians, that automation will collapse entry-level IT into a memory.
The honest answer is more complicated than the fear, and significantly more encouraging.
What the Data Actually Shows
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that overall employment in computer and information technology occupations will grow much faster than average from 2024 to 2034, with approximately 317,700 job openings each year across the field. The median annual wage for the group reached $105,990 in May 2024, more than twice the national median across all occupations.
Within that broad category, the picture is uneven. Information security analyst employment is projected to grow 29 to 33 percent over the decade, depending on the source, against an average of about three percent for all occupations. Cybersecurity has approximately 514,000 open job listings in the most recent reporting period and a workforce gap measured in millions. The labor market for security professionals is not collapsing. It is starving.
Software developer employment is projected to grow 25 percent. Data scientist and analyst employment is growing even faster. According to CompTIA's State of the Tech Workforce 2026 report, all fifty states are projected to experience tech employment gains in 2026, with several occupations growing at significantly higher rates than overall tech employment. The roles that build, secure, and govern AI systems are themselves IT roles.
The roles facing pressure are different. Traditional network and computer systems administrator employment is projected to decline three to four percent over the decade, reflecting the shift to cloud-managed infrastructure. Computer support specialist employment is also projected to decline modestly, though the field still adds about 50,500 openings each year due to replacement needs.
The honest summary is that AI is restructuring the IT workforce, not eliminating it. Some entry-level functions are being automated. Many new specializations are being created. Total employment in the field continues to grow.
What AI Cannot Do
The popular narrative skips over an important detail. AI systems run on infrastructure. They require networks, servers, storage, cloud platforms, identity systems, and security controls. They are deployed by engineers, monitored by analysts, governed by compliance specialists, and defended by security teams. The entire foundation of modern AI is conventional IT work.
A large language model is useless without the data engineering pipeline that feeds it, the cloud infrastructure that hosts it, the identity system that controls access, the security tooling that protects it from abuse, and the network that connects it to the user. Each of those layers is built and maintained by people holding the certifications that exist today.
When a Fortune 500 company decides to deploy an AI tool, they hire IT professionals to make it work. CompTIA's research consistently shows that companies investing heavily in AI also continue to invest heavily in cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, and data analytics. The growth is correlated, not opposed.
The Skill Mix Is Changing, Not Disappearing
A more honest framing of AI's impact on entry-level IT roles is this. AI tools are absorbing some of the routine task content of those roles. The remaining role is more skilled, not less. A help desk technician in 2026 is expected to triage AI-flagged tickets, troubleshoot AI-related issues, and work alongside AI assistants. The job did not disappear. It changed.
The ISC2 2025 Cybersecurity Workforce Study found that AI is now the most-needed skill in cybersecurity, cited by 41 percent of professionals, ahead of cloud security at 36 percent. Roughly 64 percent of 2026 cybersecurity job listings now require AI, machine learning, or automation skills. The same study found that while 52 percent of professionals believe AI will reduce demand for some entry-level roles, only two percent believe AI will fully replace cybersecurity professionals.
The skill restructuring is real. The replacement is not.
What This Means for a Teenager Starting Today
A high schooler earning CompTIA A+ in 2026 is not preparing for the help desk job that existed in 2010. They are preparing for the entry-level role that will exist in 2030, which will involve working alongside AI tools, supporting AI-augmented users, and developing the foundational understanding that more specialized roles require.
The student who continues to Network+ and Security+ in the years that follow is positioning themselves for the cybersecurity and infrastructure roles that the field is projected to grow into. By the time they enter the workforce at twenty or twenty-two, they will be among the first generation of IT professionals whose career began assuming AI as a tool rather than learning to adapt to it.
That timing is significant. The professionals who shape the next era of IT will be the ones who entered the field during the transition. They will define how AI is governed, how it is secured, and how it integrates with the systems organizations depend on. Those decisions are being made now, by people who hold today's certifications and are gaining the experience that informs tomorrow's policy.
Adjacent Technologies Demanding IT Expertise
AI is not the only emerging technology requiring deep IT skills. Three others are worth understanding for any parent planning a teenager's career horizon.
The first is post-quantum cryptography. In August 2024, the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized the first set of post-quantum cryptography standards, including ML-KEM, ML-DSA, and SLH-DSA. Every organization that processes sensitive data, which is nearly every organization, will need to migrate cryptographic systems over the coming decade. The work requires deep understanding of networking, security, and infrastructure, exactly the skills CompTIA's certification ladder teaches.
The second is blockchain and distributed ledger technology. The hype cycle has cooled, but the underlying technology has continued to mature in financial services, supply chain, and identity systems. Security audits, infrastructure work, and integration projects in this space require IT professionals with backgrounds in networking and cryptography.
The third is quantum computing itself. As IBM, Google, and others continue to announce milestones, demand for specialists who understand quantum algorithms, post-quantum security implications, and hybrid classical-quantum architectures will grow. These specialists will not appear from nowhere. They will be the IT professionals who built foundational skills first and added quantum specialization later.
The pattern is consistent. Every emerging technology requires the underlying skill stack that today's certifications validate.
The Real Risk
There is a real risk in technology careers, but it is not the one parents typically fear. The risk is stagnation. A professional who earns one certification, takes one entry-level role, and stops learning will see the labor market move past them. The half-life of any specific technical skill has been shortening for decades. AI is accelerating that trend, not creating it.
The protection against stagnation is the same protection it has always been. Continuous learning. Stackable certifications. Adjacent specializations. A teenager who learns to learn during their high school certification path, who experiences the rhythm of preparing for an exam and adapting to new technology, is better positioned for forty years of career change than a peer who took a more conventional academic route without that practical foundation.

In summary, the apathetic position that AI will eliminate IT careers does not match the data, the labor market, or the trajectory of the technology itself. AI is restructuring the workforce, creating significant new specializations while absorbing some routine tasks. The professionals who succeed in the next decade are the ones who entered the field with foundational skills and continued to build.
A teenager starting an IT certification path in 2026 is not preparing for a disappearing job. They are preparing for the next era, the one in which AI, quantum computing, post-quantum cryptography, and technologies not yet named will require deeper expertise, not less. The students who succeed will be the ones whose families understood the difference between popular fear and labor market reality, and acted accordingly.
