Is CompTIA A+ Worth It for a 16-Year-Old?
If you are reading this, your teenager has probably said something about computers, or you have looked at the cost of a four-year degree and asked whether there is another path. CompTIA A+ keeps appearing in the search results, often paired with promising salary numbers and the phrase "industry-recognized." The question you actually want answered is simpler. Is it real, can a sixteen-year-old actually earn it, and is it worth spending Arizona ESA funds on?

What CompTIA A+ Actually Is
CompTIA A+ is the entry-level credential for the IT support profession. It has existed since 1993 and has been earned by more than a million IT professionals worldwide. The certification is vendor-neutral, which means it teaches the underlying principles of how computers, networks, mobile devices, and operating systems work, rather than how to operate one specific brand's products. A technician who holds the A+ should be able to set up a workstation, troubleshoot a network connection, install an operating system, support a user across Windows or macOS, and recognize a security threat.
The current version of the A+ is built around two exams, Core 1 (220-1201) and Core 2 (220-1202), launched in March 2025. The older 220-1101 and 220-1102 exams were fully retired in December 2025. Each exam is ninety minutes, includes up to ninety questions, and uses multiple-choice items along with performance-based questions where the candidate has to actually solve a problem in a simulated environment.
A student must pass both exams to earn the certification. The credential is valid for three years and can be renewed through CompTIA's continuing education program.
Why Industry and Government Take It Seriously
The A+ is not a participation trophy. It is approved by the United States Department of Defense under DoD Directive 8140 for technical support specialist, system administrator, and cyber defense infrastructure support roles. That alone places it in a category very few credentials available to teenagers reach.
CompTIA's research on IT certifications for high school students found that 76 percent of IT hiring managers say certifications play a role in their hiring decisions, and 47 percent expect that role to grow. Support for relaxing or eliminating four-year degree requirements among IT hiring managers reached 85 percent in the same report. The trend is real. Employers want demonstrable skill, not credentials of attendance.
That trend changes the math for a teenager in a way it never did for previous generations.
Can a Sixteen-Year-Old Actually Pass It?
Parents ask this question more than any other, and the honest answer is yes, with the right structure. The A+ is rigorous. CompTIA recommends roughly twelve months of hands-on experience for adult test takers. A teenager will not have that experience walking in the door. What a teenager will have, when taught well, is time, focus, and a developing brain that absorbs technical material faster than most adults realize.
Where a working professional has to study A+ around forty-hour weeks and family obligations, a sixteen-year-old can dedicate six to twelve weeks of structured study to it as part of their school day or after-school schedule. Many do, and many pass.
The difference between teens who pass and teens who fail comes down almost entirely to instruction. Self-paced video alone does not work for most high schoolers. Live instruction, scheduled sessions, hands-on labs, and an instructor who can answer questions when concepts get tangled are what make the difference.
